Waste audit through a smart monitoring system in Bhopal

In a unique experiment, the Zila Panchayat of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh is planning to conduct a waste audit, the first of its kind in as many as 222 panchayats of the district.  The smart monitoring exercise would include the gathering of detailed information about waste collection from all the Gram Panchayats, which would be recorded daily through an App-based system.

According to CEO-Zila Panchayat, Shri Rituraj Singh, GPS has been installed in all the garbage collecting vehicles that go door to door each day to collect waste from households and establishments.  For the first time, a smart monitoring centre has been set up at the ZP office from where the live location of waste collection vehicles and their travel history would be observed.   It would help monitor the movement of garbage vehicles in the rural areas from the command center set up in the Zila Panchayat.

“It is a smart monitoring system that will go a long way to ensure cleanliness in all the villages,” the CEO-ZP said.

Thus far, the Zila Panchayat has equipped 120 garbage vehicles or e-rickshaws with GPS tracking system.  Also, as many as 50 tricycles have also been engaged in the collection of waste in the villages.

The mobile application that would support the waste audit would provide a daily report, revealing whether the waste is picked up, the name of the agency collecting the waste, and the quantity of waste collected each day and sent for disposal.

MP’s first rural MRF center:  Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh’s first rural Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centre has been set up in Intkhedi Sadak.  The facility is equipped to recycle waste collected from the villages into 19 waste categories.  While wet or biodegradable waste is used to make compost, dry non-biodegradable waste such as plastics is used to make chips that will be used in road construction and cement factories.  Significantly, innovative technologies are being explored to convert waste into other useful products.
