At a state level conference of rural sanitary workers held on November 15, 2021, more than 200 sanitation workers attached to Gram Panchayats of South Andaman District were honoured for their selfless service to society.
The event was organised by the Directorate of Rural Development, Panchayat Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies of the Andaman and Nicobar administration.
Speaking at the event, Additional District Magistrate, Shri Hari Kallikkat appreciated the work of the rural sanitation workers that are engaged by the Gram Panchayats for carrying out various solid waste management activities.
He also placed on record the exemplary work done by sanitation workers, particularly during the COVID pandemic where they efficiently dealt with the waste generated from isolation centres, quarantine houses and covid care facilities.
The event was attended by more than 200 sanitary workers who were presented with ration kits donated by the Akshay Patra Foundation.
According to the DC of South Andaman and Secretary-Rural Development, Shri Suneel Anchipaka, the support of the Akshay Patra Foundation was enlisted to distribute ration kits to people in support of the Department during COVID times.
Other dignitaries present at the event were SDM and AC (U/T) and the ADM who expressed his humble gratitude to the sanitation workers.
Later, as a part of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), various technical sessions on the effective practices for Solid Waste Management were conducted. The efforts being taken for achievement of the vision of Zero Waste Islands were outlined by the Nodal officer SBM(G).
The district administration also appreciated of the contributions of the Akshay Patra Foundation.
