DDWS reviews SBM-G in UP

A team from the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, led by Mr. Arun Baroka, Additional Secretary (AS), Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen (SBM-G) visited Uttar Pradesh today to review the status of their ODF Plus activities.

In a meeting with UP state officials, the AS advised them to accelerate work to make all villages ODF Plus as early as possible.  Should there be a gap in individual household latrines or if there were new households without toilets, they should be addressed with utmost urgency.

Mr. Baroka also reminded them of the criteria for declaring a village as ODF Plus depending on their interventions on the various verticals of solid and liquid waste management.  Given that all States may not fulfill all criteria under different verticals before declaring a village as ODF Plus, DDWS had reviewed the criteria and introduced intermediate stages in the process of declaring a village as ODF Plus as under:

ODF Plus – Aspiring:  A village in which all households have access to a functional toilet facility; all schools/anganwadi centres/panchayat ghars have access to a functional toilet with separate toilets for men and women; and the village has arrangements for solid waste management or liquid waste management.

ODF – Rising:  A village in which all households have access to a functional toilet facility; all schools/anganwadi centres/panchayat ghars have access to a functional toilet with separate toilets for men and women; and the village has arrangements for solid waste management and liquid waste management.

ODF – Model:  A village in which all households have access to a functional toilet facility; all schools/anganwadi centres/panchayat ghars have access to a functional toilet with separate toilets for men and women; all public spaces in the village have minimal litter, minimal stagnant wastewater and no plastic waste dump in public places; the village has arrangements for solid waste management and liquid waste management; and the village should have ODF Plus IEC messages prominently displayed through wall paintings and billboards.

He emphasized the goal of the programme which was to achieve ODF – Model status at the earliest.

Also speaking on the occasion, the Additional Chief Secretary, Panchayati Raj and Rural Development, Mr. Manoj Kumar Singh said that adequate focus should be given to the construction of IHHLs, Community sanitary complexes, community soak pits and community compost pits.  District officials should also ensure key IEC messaging.  Additionally, he directed them to utilize unspent balances as early as possible

Currently 36 districts in UP are implementing Gobardan projects.

Other dignitaries that participated in the meeting were Mission director – Mr. Rajkumar, DDWS PMU team leader, Mr. Anand Shekhar, State Nodal Officer, Mr. Yogendra Kataria, CFO – Brijesh Kumar, Deputy Director SBM-G, CDOs and DPROs and State Consultants.
