Chettupalli GP fulfills all ODF Plus parameters

From providing access to safe sanitation to door to collection of waste, solid waste management and visual cleanliness, Chettupalli Gram Panchayat (GP) in Narsipatnam Mandal of Visakhapatnam District in Andhra Pradesh has fulfilled all ODF Plus parameters and has declared itself as ODF Plus via a GP resolution.

As per the guidelines issued by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, an ODF Plus village is one that is visually clean, maintains it ODF status and has effective arrangements for solid and liquid waste management.

The ODF village consists of 1730 households and 5055 individuals.

Access to IHHL:  All households in Chettupalli village have individual household latrines and people have been using them regularly.  They are reminded to adhere to this practice by the IEC messages and other awareness generation activities conducted from time to time. Students in village also actively participate in creating awareness.

Door to collection of waste: So far 900 kgs of wet waste and 600 kgs of dry waste has been collected from households.  Soon as they collect the wet and dry waste from households, the Green Ambassadors further segregate dry waste to see what can be recycled. They also generate awareness on segregation and household composting. As a result, the waste that goes to landfills has been reduced considerably.

Solid Waste Management:  Green Ambassadors collect wet and dry waste from the village households and use the wet and organic waste to prepare vermicompost at the Solid waste processing Centre (SWPC) of Chettupalli village.  The compost is used by farmers to yield better agricultural produce.  Thus far, 6 tons of vermicompost has been generated.

Visually Cleanliness:  With all households being responsible for their waste through segregation at source and depositing the same in the tricycles brought to their doorsteps, and keeping their surroundings clean, the village and its paths look clean and tidy.

IEC activities:  In addition to wall paintings and posters, the public servants ofChettupalli village carry out various activities to generate awareness about segregation of dry and wet waste and to keep the surrounding areas clean.  This has made a big difference to the village.
