With effective water and sanitation (WASH) facilities, a well-kept campus, hygienic food preparation and rainwater harvesting systems in place, Miyanpur Ravindranagar Upper Primary School of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh is a model school in every respect.
Situated in the Mohammadi Block, the school which offers classes for standards 6 to 8 has a total strength of 132 students – 70 boys and 62 girls. The Government school, established in 2007, was graded into an English Medium School in 2019.
In 2015, when Sri Suranjan Mandal who coincidentally belongs to the same village took charge of the school as Principal, the school had neither infrastructure nor adequate WASH facilities. Compelled to bring about positive change, he with the support of the Gram Pradhan, Mrs. Sushma Dhali transformed it into a model school of the district. Their actions prove that when leaders work together, they can bring about progress.
The school has separate toilets for boys (2) and girls (2), urinals and a Divyang toilet which are cleaned regularly. The handwashing station has running water facility and students know the importance of washing their hands with soap regularly, particularly after using the toilet and before having a meal.
As for the mid-day meal provided to the children, it is prepared and served in a very hygienic manner as reflected in the health of the students.
The school has a functional Rainwater Conservation system that collects rainwater throughout the year for storage in underground tanks and used as per requirement for different purposes. The wastewater from the handpump is used in the beautiful garden that has become the talk of the town. Visitors who come to the school for rallies, competitions and extracurricular activities have expressed their delight in the beautiful surroundings.
The District Magistrate of Lakhimpur Kheri recently awarded the Principal for his exemplary service and dedication that has contributed to the all-round development of the school including WASH facilities.
