It is common knowledge that behavioural change does not occur all of a sudden. Realizing this, the district administration of Ranchi with CSR support of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) envisioned starting a revolution against ‘Single Use Plastic.’ They did this through a massive district wide campaign, covering all the 2101 schools of the district on 3rd October, 2019, under the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign of the Government of India.
With the theme – ‘Ranchi Says NO to Single Use Plastic’, the campaign involved drawing competitions in all the 12380 classrooms of all the government schools of the district, covering more than 3 lakh students. In addition, there were shramdaans, plantation drives, cleanliness drives, walkathon, and swachhata oath administered to all participants.
Commenting on the unique initiative, “We have initiated this campaign at school level in the first phase. The motive is to take this forward gradually and take a step ahead in becoming a plastic free district” said Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi, Mr. Ray Mahimapat Rai.
This is probably the first of its kind campaign in the country, given that it covered all the classrooms of all the government school within a day on an environmental issue.
The winners of the drawing competition were rewarded with metal bottles and cotton bags, to encourage them to switch from plastic bottles and plastic bags to metal bottles and cotton bags in their day to day activities.
Offering his comments, CGM-CSR, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., Mr. Satyanarayan Subbarao said, “We assisted the district administration in this ambitious campaign so as to do our bit in contributing towards saving the environment and our mother earth.”
Swachhata Shapath (sanitation oath) was taken by all participants in their respective venues, promising commitment towards making their community, a pollution and plastic free society.
Aspirational District Fellow, Satwik Mishra informed that under guidance of DC- Ranchi, there is a plan to take this campaign forward involving all government institutions.
