The Rural Management and Development Department, Government of Sikkim has issued a notification banning the sale and use of single use plastic items in all forms. Top district officials have been instructed to strictly monitor the ban within their jurisdiction.
“There has been rampant use of single use plastic items, which is detrimental to the environment and this is contributing to the burden on the scarce and very limited capacity of landfills in Sikkim,” the notification of 9th August, 2019 said.

The order from the Governor of Sikkim has instructed District Collectors, Additional District Collectors, Additional District Collectors (Development), Sub Divisional Magistrates, Municipal Commissioners, Municipal Executive Officers and Block Development Officers to strictly monitor the ban within their jurisdiction, according to prevailing rules.
