The ODF block of Ichagarh in Seraikella-Kharsawan district of Jharkhand recently bagged the CM award for team unity in achieving its ODF (open defecation free) goal. It had set an unprecedented example of best performance when compared to other blocks in the district by providing good quality toilets to all its households.
It had been the collective effort of the BDO, the block coordinator, social mobiliser along with the village organisations who collaborated to achieve the goal of improved sanitation. In fact, the SHG leader, Mukhia, Block Development Officer (BDO), head of the village organization and the junior engineer also received recognition for their untiring efforts.
Considering that sanitation coverage of the village at the start of the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin (SBM-G) was below 20%, the improvement is quite dramatic. Further, there were enormous challenges in terms of hilly terrain, difficulties in social change behaviour, etc. However, the Block Development Office, Sri Ram Oraon of Ichagarh planned and executed the task at hand very efficiently. Owing to his active leadership, his block team was able to achieve all set targets and bring about positive behaviour change towards sanitation. In this regard, they had held extensive mass awareness campaigns like nukkad natak, door to door visits by swachhagarhis, etc.
The Mukhiya of Situ Gram Panchayat who had shown exemplary efforts was also awarded and appreciated a lot by the Chief Minister himself on 1st June at the start of the Swachhta Sahyog Abhiyan to make all districts and the entire state ODF by 2nd Oct 2018.
Swachh Sankalp Abhiyan campaign envisioned by the state of Jharkhand, under the dynamic leadership of the Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Development commissioner of the district has been the driving force in taking forward the SBM-G campaign.
With sanitation coverage about to cross 97%, the district of Seraikella-Kharsawan in Jharkhand is all set to be declared open defecation free (ODF) on 15th June, 2018.
