In 2015, a 6-year-old girl in Karman village of Palwal district in Haryana was brutally raped when she went out to defecate around 6 pm one evening. It was a tragic incident that triggering the whole community to build toilets of their own.
According to block coordinator of Hodal, Chetram, the incident served to motivate people of all neighbouring villages to go for individual household toilets.
“If this has happened in one village, it could happen in other villages too,” he explained. Hence, during triggering and community led total sanitation (CLTS) training, they told people that one way of keeping their girls safe was to have toilets. Many parents were convinced.
With the villages in the block now open defecation free (ODF), the district officials continue with morning follow up and triggering which they believe should be an ongoing process for a year at least to ensure sustainability.
